Many think schadenfreude is proof that people are inherently evil, which makes sense — I mean, why would human beings derive pleasure from another person’s misfortune?
But, Schadenfreude is more related to our perceived place in society than an evil pleasure from seeing others suffer.
Schadenfreude is experienced most keenly when someone we perceive to have a better life than us falls from grace and, as such, schadenfreude is more a comment on our own perceived worth within society.
