Dr. Robin Kowalski of Clemson University has dedicated much of her esteemed professional career researching complaining.
After studying thousands of people and tens of thousands of complaints, Dr. Kowalski determined that people only complain for 1 of 5 reasons and over the next several days we’re going to not only learn the 5 reasons people complain, but we’ll also delve into how to get people to stop complaining.
The first reason people complain is simply to Get attention:
- People use complaints as ice-breakers
- Complaining can shift the focus in a conversation back around to the complainer
- By being the victim in the story, a person gets more attention from others
